On the celebration of World Polio Day last Sunday, October 24, the Department of Health (DOH), The World Health Organization (WHO), and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) encourage parents to get their children immunization on other vaccine related diseases particularly jabs against polio.

In June 2021, DOH announced the end of polio outbreak on the Philippines however Health Secretary Duque III said that they need to make sure that the outbreak in the country will not happen again.

“While we have successfully eradicated polio, we have to ensure that there will never be an outbreak again and it begins with vaccination,” Health Secretary Francisco Duque III said in a statement.

During the pandemic outbreak in the country in 2020, almost half a million of children have missed oral vaccination and a decline from polio immunization increased due to health restrictions and challenges.

On October 13, The Department of Health launched the catch-up immunization campaign which aims to reach out for Children who have missed Immunization doses, particularly on polio.

WHO, UNICEF and Rotary International are among the partners in the Global Polio Eradication Initiative, a public-private partnership led by national governments Other GPEI partners are the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

Last September 2019, the announcement of the outbreak emerged on the country along with other vaccine-preventable disease outbreaks, including the measles outbreak in February and the dengue outbreak in August of the same year.

On the other hand, the Polio Disease remains active only in the two countries, in Pakistan and Afghanistan.
